Charylnn Avery Interview:

  • "Typically, essential oils are 75 to 100 times stronger than dried herbs. What that means is, they need to be diluted which is not only beneficial to the body because we don't need a lot to have the benefit but it benefits our wallet as well. It doesn't have to be an expensive practice. When I talk about wearing oils, I'm talking about dilution. I'll make a simple blend in the morning. For me, a very simple facial serum is argan oil with six drops of neroli. I put in six drops to about a half an ounce. That's a 2% dilution. For healthy adults that's about a minimal amount that you would see benefit from in skin care. Six drops of neroli into a half an ounce or argan oil, which is a very nice companion for my skin type. Then, that's my serum. It smells nice so I'm wearing it like a perfume but then, it's also giving me my that healthy glow that I'm looking for in the morning."

  • "I've also read that there's research that says sniffing peppermint can help reduce food cravings. It's not necessarily true for each and every one of us because we don't all respond the same way, but many folks find that with peppermint oil and grapefruit oil, oregano, basil, some of the foods or the oils that come from the herbs that we cook with, when we smell them, they tend to have that effect on appetite. It's a good support moving into the holiday season when we typically overindulge.

To use this on the go just add about ten drops of peppermint oil to an ounce of water in a little mixture bottle and you shake it up each time before you spray it but then you spray it around. You want to breathe it in before meal times or before you go to a party and if you are hitting an event or a gathering that is a holiday thing, that mint has a holiday aroma association as well so you can contribute a little fresh aroma space you're in.

Grapefruit and peppermint is my favorite combo to get ahead of food cravings!

Citrus oils tend to make us feel happy, so they tend to boost the mood but bergamot, particularly, had some research behind it with its effect on feeling calm without feeling sleepy and it promotes that overall sense of calm."

  • "Having a diffuser is a great way to introduce essential oils into any aired space and some of them are very, very simple, they're little fan diffusers that sit on desks or plug-in diffusers and then, now, popular vaporizers or large diffusers are pretty common place. I like the old kind of tried and true method of you can take sea salts in a container and add essential oils and let it sit on your desk and that's a small, personal diffusion, very easy to do because the salt will contain the essential oil in it and it doesn't really interact with it and get in the way of the aroma."

  • "Essential oils for sleep? Some of the oils that do really well with this, especially at night and have that deep relaxation effect, ylang-ylang which is a heavy floral. I speak about this pretty regularly this time of the year. It seems like people really want sleep support. Ylang-ylang, if it's too potent, you can pair it with something lighter like a citrus oil to lift that heavy floral aroma but it does very well at bedtime. Patchouli is another one that is known to help us with relaxation and it's nice, earthy, deep aroma. Again, it can be polarizing so pairing it with a citrus oil. It's very relaxing. I, for many years, have called it the man's alternative to lavender because men respond well with these earthier aromas. It has that same effect that lavender does but it's not a floral, kind of girly smell that guys can be turned away by. It's relaxing, it's good for sleep."

  • "What essential oils help with menstrual cramps? Yes, we do. I think so. We can use essential oils in a lot of different ways that time of the month in our airspace to help, some the oils that help us with emotional balance, that's a great way. Topically, if you look at, again, some already created products for massage and muscle care, where the oils that are used are the ones that tend to soothe us and can help us. I use my own remedy. One of my favorite combinations, geranium and jasmine oil which are both great emotionally and topically during that time of the month."
